Did you know that Martin Luther King Jr. (MLK) Day is the only federal holiday designated as a national day of service? Originally designated to celebrate Dr. King’s birthday in 1983, the inclusion of volunteer service was signed into law by President Clinton in 1994.

In honor of MLK Day of Service, Hiteon Hawks will be collecting donations for Blanchet House, a non-profit organization that provides meals, clothing and shelter to people in need. From January 18th – 21st, bins will be placed in front of the main office from 7:45am – 3:30pm. These items will be made into care kits for Blanchet House guests.

Below is a list of the supplies that will make up the care kits:

  • Bar of soap
  • Band-aids
  • Neosporin or antibiotic ointment
  • Wet wipes or bath wipes
  • Cotton swabs
  • Lotion
  • Lip balm
  • Nail clippers
  • Pair of clean socks or t-shirt – adult-size only
  • Rain poncho – compact and folded
  • Wrapped snacks – must be easy to chew
  • Emergency Blanket – compact and folded
  • Pack of hand warmers
  • Knit hat or gloves
  • Pack bath wipes

These items can also be purchased in bulk from the Blanchet House’s Amazon wishlist or at local grocery stores.
